An Historic Milestone when Liam Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a top tactician that knows football back to front, and that's what matters most.

"However, as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage footballer, I would be lying if I said this moment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute in April 1982.

This week, the club appointed RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, 41, as their new manager after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo which also owns the London club.

Statistics show a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding individuals holding temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since its inception 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he was raised and developed his game locally, he knows this community," added Canoville.

"When kids observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of their club, a person they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for equality… that's powerful and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, it is a huge moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and let the man get on with the job."

What Do the Statistics Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the top flight's inaugural black head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English manager in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer of colour.

The lack of managers of colour across English football corresponds with an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

As per the BFP 2023's study, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers come from black heritage.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching level, according to data from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as a Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of ability that exists in the ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to persist in striving to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become the fourth permanent British head coaches presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's other big five divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

Sixteen out of twenty first division coaches in Serie A are Italian, 11 of the 20 in Spain, 12 of the 18 are German and Ten of the 18 in France.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all young English coaches from an academy background will be, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is really motivating to young English academy coaches to see an individual get that job with that profile and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, played for clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint peaked with a five-month stint in charge of then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for services rendered in combating discrimination within the sport and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He began penning a column for The Guardian, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not influence ability arguing that opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He also made the view he would repeat: that vast under-representation results in misunderstandings regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, he explained the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he understood the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, accusing him of "blatant" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the top flight's pioneering black manager in Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
